Ida Mae Pinckney was born on January 17, 1924, to the late Ethel and Lee Pinkney in Fairfax, SC.
She attended Fairfax elementary and high schools and graduated from Voorhees College. She taught
elementary school for three years and moved to New York. She met the love of her life, Thomas S.
Pinckney, Jr., in Charleston. They married on February 18,1950 and later had four children. They were
married for 48 years.
Ida continued her education at the Medical University of South Carolina. She became a Licensed
Practical Nurse and worked at the Medical University for 28 years. After retiring, she continued to
volunteer for many years because of her love of caring for others.
At an early age, she became a member of the Greater Bethel AME Church in Fairfax, SC. She converted
to Catholicism prior to her marriage. The Pinckney family were members of the former St. Peter's
Catholic Church on Wentworth St. as well as the former Immaculate Conception Catholic Church on
Sheppard St. in Charleston prior to becoming members of St. Patrick Catholic Church.
Ida was an active member of St. Patrick Catholic Church. She was a Charter member of the Knights of
Peter Claver Ladies' Auxiliary, Our Lady of Guadalupe, Court 110; Charter member of Father Egbert J.
Figaro Chapter 45 Ladies of Grace and a member of the Women's Guild. Additionally, she frequently
attended Mass at St. John Catholic Church in North Charleston, SC. She enjoyed feeding the homeless,
visiting nursing homes and collecting toys and school supplies for children.
In her later years she enjoyed watching TV - especially Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy. At 101 years old,
she was still solving puzzles. She enjoyed visiting her children, grands, great-grands and great-great
grands throughout the United States. When asked the secret of such a long life, she said - Trust in the
Lord and treat people right.
