Shirley Delores Smalls

–

Charleston, South Carolina

Shirley Delores Smalls was born October 9, 1938 in Charleston, South Carolina (Blake Street) to Ethel Smalls (Marion) and Heyward Frasier, Sr. And was the bonus daughter to Adam "Bubbie" Marion.

She attended Henry P. Archer Elementary School from seventh through eighth grade then headed over to Burke High School from 1952 - 1956 during this time she was crowned Ms. Sophomore. Upon graduating, she ventured off to New York, NY for various job opportunities but eventually returned home and started working as a Nurse's Aid at McClellan-Banks Hospital (the only hospital for Blacks at that time). Shirley was a true go-getter and attentive to the seasoned Black Doctors and Nurses that surrounded her. To the point that she decided she wanted to be a nurse, took the state's licensing exam for Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) and passed the exam without having to attend nursing school. (that was a big-deal and achievement back then). The added knowledge and skills she obtained after that secured her numerous positions and noteworthy achievements at St. Francis Hospital (Downtown) until she retired from Roper St. Francis (West Ashley) after twenty-five years of service.

Even though Shirley was busy at work, she was never too busy for God's work. She wa a life-member of Wesley United Methodist Church (Downtown) where she sang on the Women's Choir, participated in R.I.P.S., The United Methodist Women, and was a member of Roseanna Tent #18 for thirty-six plus years.

Shirley is survived by her devoted daughter, Wanda Smalls-Smith; her loving granddaughter, Victoria D. Smith and her sisters, Melinda L. Frasier, and Jaculyn Frasier-McCray both of New York, NY, and her extended family of Wesley United Methodist Church, family, cousins, and caring friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Donna Lynn Smalls; siblings: Heyward "Bozo" Frazier, Jr., Barbara Frasier-Ward, Willie Frasier, Marvin Frasier, Bernard Frasier, Randy Frasier, Jerome Frasier, and Janice Washington.
